A custom that is predominant in India, especially in Tamilnadu is to offer prayers to lord Ganapathi and then visit the presiding deity. Akin to the temple of Lord Ganapathi at Palani, Sri Babaji's sankalpa was to enable people to offer their prayers to Sri Padi Vinayagar at the beginning of the stairway path, before they commence the climb to the temple. Here devotees offer prayers by breaking coconuts, lighting a lamp/camphor and then progress to the temple.
