SRI VEL TEMPLE

The first temple to be constructed at Sri Kshetra Mayiladumkunnu is the Sri Vel Temple, just beside the sacred tree. The Sri Vel Temple houses the sacred weapon, the Vel of Lord Murugan, which is symbolic of victory. Sri Babaji declared to consecrate a Sri Vel of 6ft in height made of Pancha Loha (five metals) as per the vedic tradition. As per Sri Babaji’s declaration this sacred Sri Vel was taken to the holy temples like Thirumala, Sri Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai, the six houses of Lord Muruga in Swami Malai, Thirutheni, Palamudhircholai, Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur and Palani and then was brought to Sri Kshetra Mayiladumkunnu and consecrated with large scale celebrations, signifying the establishment of the holy abode of Lord Murugan.
